Sironi, Mario 1881 ‐ 1965

Italian

Mario Sironi was born in 1881 in Sassari, Sardinia. Sironi is recognized today as a significant Italian modernist. His practice involved painting, sculpture, illustration and design.  Prior to becoming an artist, Sironi studied engineering at the University of Rome. In 1903 he had a nervous breakdown and quit his program. He went on to study art and became affiliated with the Italian Futurists, Giacomo Balla and Gino Sevirini. His sculptures developed through his career from archaic in form towards more classical ideals.
