Julian Schnabel is an American artist that was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1951. However, his family relocated to Texas when he was still young so Schnabel grew up in Brownsville, Texas. He received his BFA at the University of Houston. He gained recognition and fame as an artist after his first solo show at the Mary Boone Gallery in 1979 and is considered a prominent part of the neo-expressionism movement in the 1980s. He is also an accomplished filmmaker with many awards and accolades including the Golden Globe for best director and the Independent Spirit Award for best director for his 2007 film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. He now lives in New York with two studios located in New York City and Montauk and is currently represented by The Pace Gallery.
